Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women, but early detection can make all the difference in successful treatment and outcomes. When breast cancer is detected at an early stage, the chances of survival are significantly higher, often leading to less invasive treatments and better overall results.
At HRC of Iowa, we believe in empowering women to take control of their health, and understanding the importance of early detection is one crucial step.
Why Early Detection is Crucial
Catching breast cancer in its earliest stages can save lives. When the cancer is found early, treatment is more likely to be effective, and the overall prognosis improves. Regular self-exams and being aware of changes in your body can help identify potential issues before they progress to a more serious stage.
Steps for Self-Examination
Self-exams are an easy and important way to keep track of your breast health. Here are some steps to follow:
- Look at Your Breasts in the Mirror
Stand with your shoulders straight and arms on your hips. Look for any visible changes in size, shape, or color. Pay attention to any dimpling, puckering, or changes to the nipples. - Raise Your Arms
While raising your arms, check for any changes that weren’t visible before. - Feel for Lumps While Lying Down
Lie down and use the pads of your fingers to feel your breasts, moving in a circular pattern. Cover the entire breast, from collarbone to the top of your abdomen, and side to side from your armpit to the center of your chest. - Feel for Lumps While Standing
Many women find it easier to detect changes when their skin is wet, so this step can be done in the shower. Repeat the same motions as you did while lying down, and cover the entire area.
When to Contact Your Doctor
If you notice any of the following changes during your self-exams, it’s time to contact your doctor for further evaluation:
- Lumps or hard knots
- Swelling in part of the breast or underarm area
- Irritation or dimpling of breast skin
- Pain in the breast or nipple area
- Nipple retraction or discharge
- Redness or flaky skin on the breast or nipple
Even if you don’t detect any unusual changes, it’s still important to follow the recommended guidelines for clinical breast exams and mammograms, based on your age and risk factors.
